The Inclusive Playroom
Designing a playroom that everyone can enjoy!
Whether your child is developing typically, has physical limitations, or neurodevelopmental differences, the key to a great playroom is the same;
Individualisation!
Our playrooms are designed in consultation with you, to ensure it fits with your family’s wants and needs. This means our designs work for your children now, and as they grow!
When designing with Ako Playrooms we;
Determine where your child’s skills are at, and where they can continue to grow.
Include your child’s extended team - e.g. Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Therapist as well as Ako Playrooms’ specialists.
Work with you and your team to understand the sensory differences and needs of your child.
Here are some ideas of things to talk about with your designer. Your child’s needs and response to;
Movement
Does your child need extra space to navigate around objects?
Do they require a variety of safe climbing and swinging equipment?
Visual
Does your child require minimal details on the walls?
Would they benefit from colour blocking to show the different play zones available?
Would soft or vibrant colours suit them more?
Lighting
Does lighting need to be flexible i.e. smart lights, turnable lights on a dimmer switch, curtains/blinds/window film, and lamps.
Sounds
Would your child benefit from removing echo, hums or vibrations?
Smells
Is your child sensitive to smells? Should we consider air ventilation or humidifiers.
Tactile differences
What are your child’s tactile preferences and aversions? Do these change during the day? Think about discussing a variety of seating options (hard and soft chairs, bean bag, wiggle seat, exercise ball etc). Do they like small spaces such as cosy nooks?
At Ako Playrooms we use our knowledge, experience and the latest research to create your perfect inclusive playrooms.
